A true conversation starter with a rare “Tropical Lava” dial

Rolex spends millions—billions, realistically—trying to build watches that never fail or fade, but collectors flock to the beautiful chemical anomalies of the past. Due to a rare organic reaction beneath the protective lacquer finish, this dial has completely transformed over the last 25 years into a molten mix of volcanic orange and vibrant yellow. Because the degradation occurred entirely beneath the topcoat, the black text remains intact—no cracking or flaking. We owe the prior owner, who resisted the urge to send this in for service despite the “defect.” Because the dial was left untouched, its one-of-a-kind patina remains perfectly intact, housed within a near-mint-condition case.
