An iconic, neo-vintage Rolex Submariner from 1984

The 16800 Rolex Submariner is the perfect everyday neo-vintage—mid to late-1980s to early-2000s—Submariner. This specific reference came after the Matte dial variants of the Submariner and introduced the first gloss dial, plus white gold surround markers that would set the design language for all future dials. The 16800 reference showcases the rugged tool-watch nature of the Submariner and incorporates vintage elements, such as tritium luminous markers that age and patina over time, rather than modern luminova counterparts.

The 1980s were a turning point for Rolex as manufacturing these Subs still involved aluminum inserts and tritium dials that would age over time. This meant that black bezels sometimes aged to a beautiful blue or grey, and the luminescent tritium material sometimes darkened or lightened depending on a number of variables, including heat, humidity, UV, and radiation.

This culminates in a watch that is far greater and deeper than the sum of its parts. We love this era for the robustness of the watches released during it and their ability to take a beating, while embracing all the things we love about vintage timepieces—a combination that few watchmakers achieve.
