Story

Kudu leather boots done right—made in collaboration with Rios of Mercedes

When it comes to making boots, this isn’t Rios of Mercedes' first rodeo. The Texas bootmaker has been crafting fine leather footwear since 1853, when the grandparents of founders Zeferino and Abraham Rios began making cavalry boots for Maximillian’s soldiers in General Terán, Nuevo León, Mexico. This rich history is exactly why we’re collaborating with the brand to create a one-of-a-kind roper boot. Found in our Flint and Tinder “Western Reserve Collection”, The Waxy Kudu is a leather stepper made from waxed kudu roughout—a luxury leather that comes from the African Greater Kudu Antelope. The material is known for its ironclad strength, water-resistance, and soft and supple feel that patinas beautifully over time. And because its got our F&T designers’ touch, you’ve got a handful of functional details to make the wearing experience above-and-beyond. Namely, leather side pulls for easy foot entry, a non-slip rubber heel, and a removable leather footbed for comfort. This is a boot fit for a certified outlaw (who pays his taxes on time).

Features

  • Made by the oldest boot maker in Texas, with more than 160 years of experience
  • Water-resistant kudu leather top that patinas over time
  • Leather side seam and piping prevent chaffing and cracking
  • American spring steel shank for maximum arch support
  • Double hand-lasted vamp to help keep its shape
  • Resoleable Goodyear welt outsole
  • Genuine bark-tanned leather insole
  • Channel sole welt to give the boot a low profile

Materials

  • Waxed kudu roughout leather
  • Strong rubber heel
  • Inset rubber on sole for additional traction
  • Removable leather footbed
  • 11" shaft height, 1.5" heel height

Sizing

  • Fits true to size, take your normal size for leather footwear
  • When you get the boots, you should have to stand and give a firm pull to get the boots on
  • The leather will conform to your foot so the correct initial fit should be snug (not tight) around the instep and the ball of your foot should fit in the widest part of the boot

Care

  • Regular Cleaning: Use a soft brush or a clean, dry cloth to remove surface dirt. For tougher stains, use a damp cloth or sponge; avoid soaking the leather.
  • Conditioning: Apply a conditioner specifically designed for suedes/roughouts. Too much conditioner can darken the leather or make it overly soft; apply sparingly.
  • Avoid direct heat: If your boots get wet, let them air dry at room temperature.
  • Storage: Keep them in a cool, dry place. Use wooden shoe trees if possible to maintain the shape and absorb moisture.
