65 years of solid, reliable eye protection

Original Pilot square aviators were first developed in 1958 to meet the unique needs of American military pilots. The distinctive shape still maximizes the field of vision while minimizing glare, and the bayonet temples (originally designed to eliminate interference with military helmets) ensure easy wear for the modern cyclist and motorcyclist. Fast forward to 1969, and these shades reached icon status. They landed on the moon as part of the survival kits of all Apollo astronauts. And yep, these aviators are still made in the USA from premium global components and still engineered to rigid military specifications.

About American Optical

American Optical has been supplying this country with quality eyewear since before Edison invented the light bulb. Nearly two centuries later, AO is going strong—still designing exceptional sunglasses, and still making them in the USA. Along the way they made fans of the Apollo 11 crew, JFK, and, well…us. We're of the opinion that a brand with that kind of staying power and this amazing lineup is worthy of words like iconic and timeless, but no need to take our word for it. Grab a pair for yourself. You'll see.
