Story

The famous made-in-Maine tote bag

Introduced as Bean's Ice Carrier way back in 1944, the Boat and Tote was billed as a bag made of builders-grade canvas for hauling ice "from car to ice chest." Today, you can spot L.L. Bean’s famous tote doing heavy lifting everywhere, from the grocery store to the beach, to the library, and the commuter train. They’re tested to hold up to 500 pounds and are double-stitched at the seams for reinforcement. To this day, they’re still handmade in Maine, one bag at a time.

As writer David Coggins once said, “It’s like a good military watch or a Duralex glass. It has not been improved upon because it cannot be.”

About L.L. Bean

In 1911, Leon Leonwood Bean returned from a hunting trip with cold, damp feet and a revolutionary idea. He decided he’d create his own innovative boot—one that combined durable leather uppers with comfortable (and waterproof) rubber bottoms. Bean called it the Maine Hunting Shoe, which eventually became the famous Bean Boot. Over the next 100 years, the Freeport, Maine-based brand created one iconic product after another. The Field Coat, the Boat and Tote, and the Norwegian Sweater, to name a few. While the story of L.L. Bean is still being written, one thing will never change: the outdoors will always be at the heart of it.
