Story

A sonic love letter to the American Southwest, a soundtrack for the listless wanderer

Jonathon Robert Linaberry has the horizon on his mind. His latest release as The Bones of J.R. Jones marks a new direction in his musical journey but maintains his southern gothic roots. Listening to A Celebration EP, you get the idea that these songs are both from somewhere and headed somewhere else, as J.R.'s heady, gravelly vocals put you in the shoes of a traveller—spurred forward by a distant drum beat and lifted up by reverb-soaked guitars. Lay the needle down into this vinyl record—a deep orange shade like the desert sun—and let J.R. take you with him.

About The Record

  • A Celebration was inspired by J.R.'s trips to Tucson, Bisbee, Joshua Tree, and other desert destinations
  • The production plays with sounds that feel both familiar and foreign, like slide guitar and digital snares
  • J.R.'s lyrics throughout the EP revisit the peace and vulnerability that he and his wife felt while sitting in a solitary cabin in the middle of the open prairie, watching a thunderstorm roll in
  • Field recordings of sparsely populated streets, birds chirping, and dogs barking in the distance are woven throughout, giving these songs a real sense of place—as if they just came on the radio while you were sitting on the porch
